From the Baron & Baroness

Greetings fellow Boggers

Peace has once again settled on the lands. We hope everyone had a great Pennsic.

This month is the Coronation of TRHs Rurik and Elspeth on September 28th. We hope to see many of you there. If anyone has items for the gift basket please let us know or get it to us prior to the event date. If anyone wants to car pool let us know. At this month’s meeting discussion is planned for Baronial Champs, if you have any input, ideas, suggestions please be there or contact us so that we can relay your thoughts to the rest of the group.

The Bog will be sponsoring the 7 Pearls Inter-Baronial Fencing Tourney again next year. It would seem everyone enjoys the Three Day so much and the Bog fencers do such a great job of setting up the field that they want us to do it again!

So long as the Raven flies and the Cattails grow,
we remain in service to Crown and Bog,

Aquila and AElfra
Baron and Baroness

From the Seneschal

Greetings Fellow Boggers and Friends of the Bog,

Having recently returned from our "family vacation" I am full of stories, as I'm sure are all the other Boggers who attended the Thirty First annual Pennsic War. I look forward to that time when we all may share those stories, not only amongst those who went but with our comrades who were absent. (and low, we did miss kiwi).

Once again the Bog shone and could not be overlooked by the Known World. I am proud of the Bog for what we are able to achieve through the individual efforts that become the entirety of St. Swithin's Bog.

St. Swithin's Bog received many compliments. We were complimented on our groups "good looks" as a whole. We were complimented in that there are those who are not in our borders but wish to be considered Boggers. There are those who seek our counsel to find out how to make a group run like the Bog. (I told the Baroness to just tell everyone the secret is in the Gobi.) And on that note it was said by a gentle who attended both weeks of Pennsic that the best party at the war was the Bog Gobi Party.

Perhaps the best part of the Bog, and the thing that makes it work the best is Friendliness. Which perhaps is best defined "simple use of courtesy, honor and chivalry, given equally to all". We extend common courtesy and considerateness to each other and to those we come in contact with. (How else could we manage a week or more of camping in August heat with out maiming each other?)

To all those who attended Pennsic and all the hard work you shared, for all the little touches, for all the simple pleasantries that make the War a wonderful memory, I thank you. For all the works throughout the year that make the Bog what it is, I thank you. Vivant to all the Bog!

I look forward to seeing you all at the Baronial Champions event(s) where we will find out who will be our martial representatives for the coming year. Good luck to all the participants--I'm sure there will be many! (ahem, hint-hint). Please come and try your hand at the competitions, and do so for me in my stead. Because of scheduling request requirements at work I will not be able to attend short of a miracle from St. Swithin himself.

In service I remain,
Lady Talishar
Seneschal

The September meeting will be held September 8th due to the holiday weekend. Everyone please enjoy our last bit of summer while it lasts. Please plan on being at the meeting so we may solidify Baronial Champs planning. Thank you. Tali

From the Chronicler

Greetings all and welcome back to those who ventured off to Pennsic XXXI (or as our Seneschal refers to it, the "Family Vacation"), your presence was missed... and envied.

Don’t forget, for those who have attended Pennsic this or any other year, if you have a story (be it humorous or serious) please send it my way. Those who were there will no doubt enjoy reminiscing and those who were not will enjoy hearing about what we missed. So far Baroness Charmaine wins the award for the most interesting and humorous Pennsic XXXI story.

Thank you to those who sent in reports. Please everyone remember to get your information in for October’s issue especially if there are any updates or changes in practices or guild meetings. Thank you.

If you have any questions or would like to submit anything to the newsletter (either the hard copy or electronic version), please contact me at 724-238-0114 or bogchronicler@yahoo.com.

In service,
Lady Caitilin "Cait" ni Mhaolconaire

From the Chatelaine

Greetings from Your Chatelaine Charmaine!

Thanks to all who attended the demo at Camp Sequanota on Saturday, August 24: Dame Vivienne, Baroness AElfra, Don Iago, Don Quinn, Lord Richard of North Fork, Ryan of North Fork, Alric and Francis Martin (Jim Ford and kids). We entertained for nearly an hour and a half with demonstrations of fencing, thrown weapons, archery (lecture), and heavy weapons. It was a small turnout for Sequanota's Heritage Festival and Quilt Show, but those who watched were very interested and appreciative. Thanks again, everyone!

– Baroness Charmaine

News from the Western Border

Report from the Western Border:

As no gathering was held on the borderland for the month of August, I haven’t much to report.

The September gathering on the borderland will be Tuesday, September 10 from 6:30-7:30 pm at Adam’s Memorial Library in Latrobe. Please remember though that we have the room from 6:00 til 7:30 so if you wish to chat or do research don’t hesitate to arrive a little early.

New people will hopefully be attending the gathering on the 10th. Any Boggers able to come, please bring along examples of clothing or craftsmanship or even photos from events to share.

Hope to see everyone there.

In service,
Lady Caitilin ni Mhaolconaire

Baronial Champs -- Heavy Weapons

Unto the Heavy Weapons fighters of the Barony of St. Swithin’s Bog does Lord Uthr Darrus send greetings.

Once again the time has come to take up arms in the tournament that decides who will represent the Barony as this year’s champion.

Thus do I send out this challenge to all the fighters of the Bog – polish your armour, put new tape on your sticks, paint your shields and bring your guts, determination, and love of the game to do battle in honour of the Baron and Baroness.

Here are the rules:

#1 You must have a Herald to announce you to the field!

This can be anyone you choose and s/he doesn’t need to be an actual herald, but you must have one in order to enter the competition. You may write your own introduction (please watch the profanity) or take your chance with the herald of your choosing.

#2 This will be a Point System Tournament each person will fight 4 bouts, 2 bouts Paus de Arms and 2 standard open bouts.

2 points for shield and sword/ax/mace also two weapons any style (including Maudu)
3 points for great weapon sword/ax
4 points for pole arm/glave
5 points for spear and/or dagger

The only way to win the points is to win the bout with that weapons form.

#3 The top four or five fighters (depending on the number of combatants) will enter into a grand malee. The last man or woman standing will be the Baronial Champion for the next year. If this person can not fulfill his or her duty as champion, then it will be to the discretion of the Baron to appoint a new champion.

You may only fight the weapons forms you are authorized in. Bring your stuff, your water, your attitude and your oxygen for it’s crunch time folks let’s have some fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you have any questions please feel free to call or email me (David Cook) at 724-529-0636 or lorduthr@msn.com.

Always in service to Bog and Crown,
Lord Uthr Darrus
Heavy Weapons Champion

Happenings in the Bog

Post War Notes......

War was hot but a lot of fun. Thanks to everyone who helped make it so. The sheet wall is coming along (great job Lisa). The Tavern was greatly appreciated and we should get together next year prior to Pennsic to better plan and stock it (way to go guys-you know who you are). We had a lot of entertainment in camp and much of it was Boggers, thanks everyone. The Bog saw many old friends visit the camp, and the thing I heard was they wanted to "come home" to the Bog. What a warm feeling!

Wish list for next year:

1. Panel for the wall at AEthelmearc Royal with the Bog device- actually this is a request from TRM's.
2. A large hanging Bog banner for behind the thrones for Royal court.
3. A large banner for the field and processions.

Until the stirrings of War are again heard
AElfra

Pennsic Stories

A "No... ummm... Shoot... There I Was"
story from Pennsic XXXI:

The most fun I had at Pennsic this year was being hit in the head with a 3-foot penis . . . Baron Connor MacLiam was to receive his writ for elevation to the Order of the Pelican after I Genesii's performance Monday evening. Naturally, he knew nothing about it, but the rest of the Known World did. Connor played Arlicchino, a dim-witted free spirit who, at one point, is given a potion that made his member grow to--ahem--LARGE proportions. He wandered through the audience in a daze looking for his employer's son, came up behind me and swung the thing into my head! My coronet flew off and I laughed so hard, I could barely breathe!!
