SPRING ARCHERY COMPETITION
June 08, 2002
St. Swithin's Bog

With the retreat of winter from the mountains of AEthelmearc, the Dragon and the Tiger both begin to grow restless in their lairs. Soon the specter of war will stalk the land. Warriors of all kinds will soon hear the call to arms. Now is the time to sharpen your skills.

Thus, the Western Border of St. Swithin's Bog invite all archers to come and bend their bows in an unusual sort of archery competition. Participating archers will try their skill against a cleverly (some might say fiendishly) designed course of targets. But it is not accuracy alone which will determine a victor, one's speed will play a major role.

For those who do not wish to shoot, we will offer a number of A& S activities, including the creation of a tapestry on a large loom. This activity will be open to any adults or children who wish to participate. There will be ample space for pick-up bouts for both fencers and heavy fighters. There will be a silent auction as well. Proceeds from the auction will go to purchase a new book on a medieval subject for our meeting place - Adamas Memorial Library, in Latrobe PA. As always, merchants will be most welcome. Please contact the autocrat and let him know you are coming.

The evening's feast will be prepared by Lady Rowan Blackthorne. Please contact her with dietary questions ). Onboard space is limited to 50 gentles.

During the evening's repast, there will be a themed bardic competition, sponsored by House Firebrand. And, for the enjoyment of the ladies, there will be a men in tights competition.

The site is discretely damp (beer, wine, and mead only please)

The site will open at 10:00 AM and will close 10:00P.M.

Our site will once again be the Flax Scutching Grounds on Rte 711, in Stahlstown, PA (No Street Address) This site is easily accessible from either Rte 30, or the Pennsylvania Turnpike. (Directions below.)

The fees for the day's festivities are; Adults: $8.00, onboard $4.00 off-board. Children: 4 - 12 $2.00, Children under 4: free. $1.00 off admission with the donation of an item for the auction.

Greeting unto the Bog Populous from Lady Talishar of Long, Seneschal, As the time of this writing is immediately following Crown Tourney, I feel I must take a moment to say VIVAT to our new Prince and Princess,Rurik and Elsbeth! Congratulations! I have seen nothing but smiling (and giggling) Boggers since the news was passed. I sit and write this missive and find that apparently gargoyles have taken my attention span and concentration and run with it. Though it is hard to believe I can't think of a thing to say! Boggers, Play well, have fun!

 Baron Aquila and Baroness Aelfra:

Greetings Fellow Boggers;
We hope to see many of you at the Spring Archery Challenge, to be held here in the Bog on June 8th. It should be a fine event and we are looking forward to attending.

The Three Day is fast approaching. Their Royal Majesties (update 5-23-02: Only the Queen will be attending) will be in attendance. The theme for the A&S competition is "Culture Clash". Show how the Vikings influenced your personas culture. Good luck to all. Please give of your time so that all may enjoy the event.

Soon the call to War will be heard. The Bog camp would be much cleaner and more private if everyone painted two sheets to cover the front of the camp. We have been asked to guard AEthelmearc Royal for 2 shifts again this year. Let us know what days we want to guard. We need to sign up very soon. We will to try for the evening shift (5-9 PM) so no one gets sun stroke. King James II has asked that all the Baronies process to the field battle together. Please try to process then and for opening ceremonies on Monday, let us show the known world the splendor of the Bog.

Thanks to everyone who have turned out for the "basket case guild." We're having a lot of fun and getting things made for the gift baskets that are given to visiting Royalty and such. Contact Dame Vivienne for details.

So long as the Raven flies and the Cattails grow, we shall remain in service to Crown and Bog;

Aquila and AElfra
Baron and Baroness of St. Swithin's Bog

WESTLAND MORS: Greetings unto the Barony of St. Swithin’s Bog from the Western Border!
Much was discussed within a reasonable space of time. Going about the room, we touched on a class, demos,
and the upcoming event.

Class: Tablet Weaving by Rose Thorne. Rose has volunteered to teach a class on Tablet Weaving. While she is still ironing out the details, she would like to see the class take place on either June 4 or 25 (preferably the 25th) at 6:30pm. The maximum amount of people for a class is 6-8 people. Anyone interested should contact her for more information, thorneskeep@hotmail.com .

Demos: Summer Reading Club programs Both Adams Memorial Library in Latrobe and Ligonier Valley Library in Ligonier have asked us to perform demos for their Summer Reading Club programs. The theme this year is "Spotlight on Reading - Be a Star @
Your Library" featuring the arts, history and so forth.

The demo at the Latrobe library has already been set for Saturday, July 27 from 10:30 am to Noon. The Ligonier Library has been narrowed down to either Monday, July 8 or Thursday, July 11 from 6:30 pm til 7:30 pm. Both libraries have offered to make
substantial monetary donations. So, the more people we can get to show and make a nice presentation the better.

This is a great chance for us to share the knowledge and abilities we have with kids who someday may grow up to be new members or at least fellow lovers of history. Both libraries would like active demos with singing, music, dancing, fencing, heavy weapons.
Scadians would also be welcome to come work on A&S projects - calligraphy or scroll work. The general age range for both libraries is 5 - 12 years old (parents will also attend at Ligonier’s). We can expect anywhere from 25 - 100 kids to attend at either library. If you are willing to help, please contact Lady Cait (that’s me) via email at snowdragon1027@yahoo.com or phone 724-238-0114 (leave
a message if you get answering machine).

Event: The Spring Archery Event All but 1 or 2 targets have been completed and the archery course has been laid out. Still needed are
volunteers to serve feast, troll, and an A&S sitter - anyone willing to help, please contact Lady Meglin at tgress@sgi.net. Also Lady Rowan needs camp stoves, serving bowls, and 5-gallon drink containers/coolers - contact her at rowan@stargate.net or phone
724-838-7069 (before 9pm - you may also contact Rowan about helping out).

Target Making Party - Morgan and Meglin would like to thank everyone who attended the target-making party on April 27: Derrick, Timon, Rowan, Laochlain, Gwilym, Eric Blackheart, and Talisidhe. They would especially like to thank Derrick and Timon (and their power tools) for actually coming up with the ideas for the targets and constructing them. The rest of the crew helped by holding onto things, handing them parts, fetching drinks, and shooting arrows at them (the targets, not Derrick and Timon) to test them.

Next meeting:
The Western Border gathers monthly on the 2nd Tuesday, however, the library will be closed for Latrobe’s Community Days. We still plan to have a meeting on June 11, but place is still to be announced. Contact Lady Kat with questions at either mozina@sgi.net or phone 724-838-0420 (before 9pm).

And so another Tuesday gathering on the borderland came and went without the bearing of arms!

Respectively submitting, in service to the kingdom and barony,
Lady Caitilín ní Mhaolconaire

DAUGHTERS OF THE CARAVAN:

The Daughters of the Caravan has been keeping busy, despite the hectic schedules of the individual dancers. On Saturday, May 4th, Esmeralda co-sponsored a day-long Middle Eastern dance seminar in Ebensburg. Both Dona Caroline and Juliana devoted that day to furthering their studies of the dance. In the evening, the Daughters of the Caravan (Caroline, Esmeralda, Julianna, and Sorcha) performed a saucy Spanish-styled dance for the seminar show. Esmeralda also performed with her student troupe, Celestial Bodies, in their dance debut. Both troupes' performances were well executed by the dancers - and well received by the audience.

While the Daughters of the Caravan are taking a brief break for the summer, Esmeralda remains busy with dance classes, teaching 4 classes per week. Anyone interested in learning the ancient art of Middle Eastern dance is encouraged to contact Esmeralda directly or through the sites where she holds classes: Fitness Plus and Waist No Time fitness center in Richland, and Conemaugh Chiropractic in East Conemaugh. Beginner classes are now forming. Ongoing classes at Fitness Plus can be joined at any time. Hope to see YOU in a class soon.

Exchequer BadgeEXCHEQUER REPORT: Checkbook balance: $5,103.09. If anyone is interested in becoming the Deputy Exchequer, please contact me.

WHY DO WE DO DEMOS: (Excerpts from Tali's E-mail)

Greetings all,
Cait mentioned the need for assistance with two Library demos ….. I know that there are very good reasons for me to be going. There are some very good reasons for any or all of us to go when we can. Granted demos can be boring, suck, a drag etc. Here in lies the problem, demos are not for what we can get, they should be for what we can give.

We are a not for profit Educational organization. A hobby for fun. Those things we can give to others, not for our profit but for theirs.
And I believe in doing so we enact the main tenants of the society Honor, Courtesy and Chivalry. Getting members is always a great thing, but that is not always the focus of a demo. Doing a demo for small children may seem like not a good opportunity to some, but in a way it is as great an opportunity.

When we give in small ways to the community we create a positive presence. People see and learn about us in a positive light. In many
small ways it is marketing and networking and "we'll scratch your back, you scratch ours. These little "gigs" are ways to "get out there". As far as the library, if I interpreted it correctly, they receive a grant in order to achieve certain goals, getting a group in such as ours to do a small program helps them to meet their criteria and they can continue to get a grant. Badda boom badda bing, there ya have it, in a small little way we become a vehicle that contributes to the betterment of the community.
In service I remain,
Talishar

Chronicler badgeINTERIM CHRONICLER: Greetings folks! from Lady Katerina de La Marne, Interim Chronicler for the Barony of St. Swithin's Bog.

This is the second installment of the Sentinel Online and my last as Chronicler. Lady Caitilín ní Mhaolconaire has agreed to take over the position of Chronicler.

Next month you should all receive a post card asking is you would rather receive the Sentinel electronically or via the post office. At this time 66 people are signed up on the bogs e-group. Hopefully, that means 66 people prefer the newsletter electronically. The goal of an electronic newsletter is to SAVE $$$. We save money on postage, photocopy fees, paper ect. The fewer copies we mail, the more money we save. The long term goal: A Color Arts & Sciences issue show casing the works of members of the Bog. We have never done this before. Lets show Aethelmearc what a group of talented people we have !

This Color A&S issue will showcase calligraphy, illumination, garb, leather and wood works, metal works (swords/medallions/jewlery etc.) and lots lots more. If you have a something you would like to show off, take pictures of it, either by camera or photocopy so when the call goes out for work you have stuff to submit.

Thanks for the memories,

Lady Katya
