Greetings Fellow Boggers,
What a busy first half of the year! On to the second half, which looks to be filling up fast. This is an exciting time for the Bog. We're going electronic, the newsletter that is! This will save the Bog a lot of money. Of course those who don't have access to a home computer will still get a paper copy and every January and July a paper copy will be sent to everyone. We would like to see A & S articles and such in these newsletters especially.
We are calling for someone to autocrat the Baronial Champions Event either in September (not the 28th) or early October. Please contact the Seneschal or us if you are interested. This is the perfect event if you are a first timer, as it tends to be small and private.
July has us at the Three Day event, July 19, 20 and 21. Please try to volunteer some of your time so that all may enjoy the weekend. We look forward to seeing many of you there. Good luck to Lord Quinn Kerr, Baronial fencing Champion, who will be representing the Bog in the 7 Pearls Inter-Baronial fencing Tourney. There are also several demos scheduled this month, please make every effort to attend and help out. This is how we grow. Demos need not only fighters and fencers but those of the gentle persuasion to talk about what we do and have to offer.
August we go to WAR! Please see the "War Notes" else where in this (and next month's) newsletter for updates about Pennsic.
The Coronation of HRH Rurik and HRH Elspeth is September 28th in the Barony March of the Debatable Lands (Pittsburgh). We are going to start to put together the gift basket soon. If you have something you want included please let us know.
October thru December looks like it will be slowing down some for the Bog. The Baronial Champs will have been chosen and winters cold on the way.
So long as the Raven flies and the Cattails grow,
we remain in service to Crown and Bog,
Aquila and AElfra
Baron and Baroness
Greetings unto their Excellencies and to the Populous of the Bog from Lady Talishar of Long, Seneschal,
As of this writing I recently returned from the Sylvan Crusade. What got off to a wet start became a beautiful weekend full of what our hobby is all about- FUN. From what I could see there were Boggers everywhere participating in almost all the activities. The presence of the Bog once again was seen and felt and welcomed. I must say again how proud and honored I am to be the Seneschal of this group.
Congrats to Ian for becoming apprentice, I'm sure your mommy the Baroness is so proud. Next to Ian being called into court I must say I think the most striking thing from the weekend had to be the wee little girl who approached the throne with such aplomb and curtsied with a reverence I did not think capable of a four (?) year old. It was precious. (no I didn't really use that word)
Most recently I attended the Spring Thing Archery Challenge in our Westland border. VIVATS to all the folks out there who made the day what it was. Wonderful. (ok, so they can't take credit for the weather but) Though the attendance was small it afforded a cozy picnic like atmosphere enabling those on site to mingle with everyone and have friendly easy conversation with out the usual hustle and bustle we are sometimes afflicted with at larger events. The archery challenge was FUN. The feast FANTASTIC! Well done Westland Boggers, I am very glad I was able to attend.
Quickly coming up locally will be our Annual Three Day Event. I'm looking forward to seeing all of the Boggers there. And if there are any newer folks out there who receive our newsletter but have not yet made an event, please contact myself or Lady Charmaine and make arrangements to attend, all ya need is garb, and there is plenty of that around. You'll not regret spending a day as part of the Bog in our current Middle Ages.
Lastly I have two items to impart. They are only idle thoughts that have rattled around in my head, and are only meant to be idle thoughts to rattle around in yours. I would like to see a small token of the Bog displayed when our members participate in marshal activities, everyone should have, and if not you can be supplied with; the Bog marshal badge "cookie" on a red baldric. These can be placed on your belt, tied around your arm etc. Most often they have been seen on our fencers, I began wearing mine during archery. It would be nice to see Bog colors on the field of battle. Let all the Known world know of us and quake at our might. Let all know we are a large part of the strong back bone of AEthelmearc.
Until next month, Boggers have fun, be safe, and return with tales of victories and friends made.
In service,
Talishar
Greetings to the Populace and Friends of the Bog from Lady Caitilín "Cait" ní Mhaolconaire,
Well, it appears I'm to be your new chronicler. As many of you will hear and read, the newsletter is undergoing some changes.
The biggest change to take place will be in "how" you receive the Sentinel. For the year 2001, the cost of sending the Sentinel out in hard copy to all its members was approximately $800.00 (or about $200 a quarter). With the post office about to again raise the postage price, the decision was made to only send out a monthly hard copy of the newsletter to those people who either need or have especially requested one. Everyone else will find a copy on the Bog's new website (www.stswithinsbog.org) Also by placing it on the web page we make the newsletter accessible to people from other areas. However, a hard copy will be sent out to everyone in January and July, hopefully with a review and prediction from each officer.
If you have any questions or would like to submit anything to the newsletter (either the hard copy or electronic version), please contact me at 724-238-0114 or bogchronicler@yahoo.com.
In service,
Cait
There will be a Baronial Arts and Sciences Championship held at the Bog-Halla three day event this year. The theme is "HANDS: use them to make something and enter it." So the sky is the imit on this particular competition.
There will also be a brewing contest with a special look at meads. A&S information will be coming out on the egroup list shortly.
Scribe Guild still meets the first Thursday of the month with mini meetings to work on scrolls or whatnot every Thursday after that. July's meeting will probably be the 11th because the first Thursday is the fourth of July. Time is around 6 or 6:30 p.m. Anyone interested in calligraphy or illumination work is invited to attend.
July 19, 20, 21 is the three day event of course. Don't miss it.
August is the War of course and the weekend following War, August 24, is the demo at Camp Sequanota. I am not sure of the time for this as yet. I am sure Charmaine will post this closer to the date.
Basket Case Guild will continue to meet on Wednesday evenings at Sarai's. Even if we are not working on anything. We can at least shmooze with each other... This is also a 6-6:30ish start time.
Dame Viv
Greetings from Your Chatelaine Charmaine!
We have been——and continue to be——demo-ing our hearts out! The demo at Laurel Arts in Somerset in April was small, but successful. One of the sign-ups came to the Westmoreland Archery Event a few weeks ago. Plus, I did a talk on medireview garb for the American Association of University Women in May, not actually a demo, but two women expressed interest in the SCA and one of them also attended the Archery Event.
There are two demos coming up in Westmoreland area: Ligonier Library – Thursday, July 11, 6:30 pm., and Adams Memorial Library – Saturday, July 27, 10:30 am to Noon. Please contact Lady Cait, our chronicler, with questions and if you plan to attend.
We also have a demo at Camp Sequanota scheduled for Saturday, August 24, in conjunction with their Heritage Days. I don’t have the particulars on this demo yet; when I get them I’ll pass them along.
There may be other fall demos in the works – stay tuned!
Anyone who would like Barony Business cards to pass out, let me know. I have them on my computer at home and can print out a sheet or two for anyone who asks. I also have hard copy new comer hand outs for those who aren’t internet connected.
Support your Bog demos!
– Baroness Charmaine
As of the July 9 business meeting, the Barony has a balance of $3,882.86.
I still do not have a deputy. Anyone interested, please contact me at (814) 629-5794 (no calls after 10:00 pm) or burgundy@pennswoods.net

This past Father's Day I built a shelf with the supervision of their Excellencies AElfra and Aquila. While at Wal-Mart I hade purchased a clipboard and am presently listing contents of the shed so that anyone taking an item out must sign for it. My future plans for the shed are to build two more shelves and clean up the surrounding debris from around the shed. What are the plans for the PVC pipes in the back of shed? Are we going to keep them or discard them?

Just wanted to let everyone know of a new addition to the Bog Website. Have trouble keeping track of names and faces? Well, I've done the work for you. Take a peek at our new photo album, The Bog Mugshot Album. I've been trying to get photos of all the boggers since last year and you can see some of the results here. Now you know why I keeping asking people to stand against a wall so I can shoot them. I currently have 42 bogger-mugs on-line and I will track the rest of you down (forgot the camera when we went to Spring Thing). Look at your pic and if you have a photo you like better, I can replace your mug with your favorite. I'll be adding some more photo albums in the near future.
http://stswithinsbog.org/album.html
Update your book marks to the stswithinsbog.org URL since I'll probably be taking the old site off-line completely within the next month or so.
As always, if you have any corrections, additions or suggestions, e-mail me at kenn12260@aol.com.
Virtually yours,
Kenn the Just
Anyone wishing to submit or work on a device, please contact Ludwig von Strassburg.
If you were born in July, please check your authorization card for the expiration date!
From the Baronial Marshal of Fence
The Bog fencers are in high gear getting Quinn ready for the Inter baronial fencing event (7 pearls of AEthelmearc). Our barony once again has the privilege of hosting this tourney, and I would hope that everyone will support Quinn by watching his performance at the 3 day. We are confident the the Bog will boast the first Inter Baronial/Queens Rapier Champion! In addition to the 7 pearls tourney we will also have a melee tourney at our 3 day. Once again our autocrats have challenged the fencers with a theme event... Vikings! Be ready for a wild Viking theme tourney with loads of Bog humor. So, fencers of the barony be ready, and all others come and watch the fun.

Practices are still being held at Roxbury Park starting from 1:30 to 2:00 P.M. and ending? We will be continuing to fight at the park until cold weather sets in. The general public has been acclimating and inquiring about the SCA. Gentles of all ages are coming to watch. More support from the Baronial members would be appreciated for answering their questions. Two more fighters have been authorized to help protect our lands at WAR! There will be an armor workshop at Chapple Brothers from 7:30 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. on Saturday July 13, 2002. This is the only weekend I have left before the Three Day and War. Bring your armor and or shields that are in need of repair or projects that you would like to have completed. I will show you how to do them, but will not do them for you. Due to lake of participation, there will be another War Clean up on Saturday, July 27, 2002 I expect to be on site at approximately 10:00 A. M. Dave Cooper has been extremely helpful in the shaping of our land and if you have questions about your spot or what you can or cannot do he is the man to talk to.

AMENDMENT - The change of date for the July meeting was to enable people to attend the Twin Lakes Demo. However, with the cancellation of the Twin Lakes Demo, the business meeting has been moved back to its normal date: July 7 at Lady Sarai’s.
News from the Western Border
Report from the Western Border, June 11:
Greetings unto the populace and friends of the
Bog,
The gathering, this
month held at Ligonier Valley Library, was well attended. In addition to the
standard few from the borderland, we were visited by the Baron and Baroness,
Talishar and Katya - Thank you for attending. Lady Talishar has mentioned before
her plans to visit us quarterly. With this in mind, we discussed having that
gathering at Ligonier library.
The Archery event
held Saturday, June 8, went well. The weather was beautiful, the feast
fantastic. There were 38 people in attendance; and 14 participants in the
archery Challenge. The winners of the day were Lady Talishar and Wilhelm Von
Stromberg. Special recognition went to Don Lyev, who shot using a crossbow. At
court, Lord Derrick was inducted into the Order of St. Swithin’s for A&S,
and Lady Cait (that’s me) was inducted into the order for service. According
to Lord Morgan, Derrick and Timmon have volunteered to run next years event, but
nothing definite was declared by them.
Lady Kat is still looking for yarn donations. She’d
like to bring her handmade loom to three-day for everyone’s enjoyment, but she
needs a lot of yarn to make this possible. See the announcement in the
newsletter or contact Kat at 724-838-0420 or mozina@sgi.net
for more information.
The Twin Lakes Demo
has been cancelled. However, we have two other demos for July: Thursday, July
11 at Ligonier Valley Library, 6:30 p.m.; and Saturday, July 27 at Adams
Memorial Library (in Latrobe), 10:30 a.m. til Noon. Both demos are part of
each library’s Summer Reading Club program. If you can attend either or both,
please contact Lady Cait (me again) at 724-238-0114 or snowdragon1027@yahoo.com.
The Barnes & Noble demo is still in the works, and will probably be held
sometime in the Fall. We’re also trying to contact area colleges about doing
demos with them during their Fall or Spring semesters.
And so ended our
gathering on the Borderland. The next gathering will be Tuesday, July 9, from
6:30-7:30 p.m. at Adams Memorial Library in Latrobe. Remember though, we have
the room from 6:00 til 7:30 p.m. so if anyone wants to arrive early to chat or
get a head start on a project, please do so. We hope to see you there!
In service,
Lady Caitilín ní Mhaolconaire
From the Spring Archery Challenge's Autocrat
Lord Morgan of Caer Graeme would like to thank the following gentles for their help with the Spring Archery Challenge: Rose Thorne for making the feast tokens; Rowan for being the feastocrat; Laochlain for being assistant feastocrat/archery setup/lifting heavy stuff; Derrick and Timmon for making the targets/setting up the targets/running the range; Caitilín for helping troll/clean-up crew (we won’t mention spitting); Kat for decorating the hall/serving/clean-up crew; and Meglin for various things. I would also like to thank everyone who attended. A good time was had by all.
A Hunt for Weaving Material
All members are requested to save up their yarn for a large tapestry weaving that we would like to begin hopefully at this year's 3-Day Event. It will be up to all of you to save up enough materials so that it will be worthwhile hauling and setting up the huge contraption. If one person around Johnstown could volunteer as a collection area for the local members there that would be great. I can collect materials in this area. We do not plan to finish it at 3-Day, but perhaps set it up at other times and work on it until it is completed. When completed it will be a very colorful, almost abstract design that each member can say they worked on. This can then be put on display at demos and events.
We need A LOT of yarn! Any size is fine. In fact it is really great if we have other items that can be woven in as well to add to the textural effect. Almost anything long, thin and flexible will work such as: macramé cording, horse tail hair, strands of rough wool, it is really up to your imagination. If you have left over fabric- cut it into long thin strips (about 1/2" wide) that can be woven through. Please pre-cut fabric as we won't have time to cut it on site. Many types of weaving materials can be used- and they are even better if they have some sentimental meaning to them which will remain permanently in our weaving for the Bog to display.
So please keep this project in mind when you are spring cleaning or cleaning out other relatives houses. We can use just about anything in any color and texture.
In Service,
Lady Kathryn de Lyon de Savoire, "Kat"

WAR NOTES
Water/showers- As has been discussed, everyone should bring thier own dringing water. There will be barrels of clean water for showers and cleaning, in the camp for all to use. Gentles should be prepared to supply their own showers (groups/families/households should get together and plan accordingly).
Remember to paint a sheet or two for the front of the camp. Grommets also need to be placed for hanging. Questions? contact Baroness AElfra.
Monday morning is opening ceremonies, we hope to have as many Boggers as possible take part. Lets show the world how spiff we are!
Wednesday- Guarding AEthelmearc Royal camp from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm. If you are able to guard please contact Lord Connor McGregor at gossard@pennswoods.com. It always a lot of fun.
For now the field battle is scheduled for Friday. (With luck it will stay that way)
Please check back next month for more information. For more Pennsic information check out pennsicwar.org.
Until next month,

THE LIBRARY DEMOS
Ligonier Valley Library - Thursday July 11th from 6:30.
Adams Memorial Library (Latrobe) - Saturday July 27th from 10:30 am til
noon.
We're doing a special demo for each library's Summer Reading Club program - kids grades K-6 (ages 5-12). And, in the case of Ligonier, parents will attend. The children’s librarian at Ligonier has asked us to set up stations for displaying or performing (pardon the use of the word) in. There should be a short intro, then we’ll allow the kids and parents to wander.
We need heavy weapon fighters, fencers, musicians, as well as a scribe & an artisan - all of you create some of the most beautiful and fascinating things! Things that kids can't see just anywhere. We've also been asked about food (i.e. homemade bread and honey-butter) - I believe Baroness Ælfra has kindly agreed to tackle this issue.
If the plan for the Ligonier library goes well, then we might adopt the same format for Latrobe library's demo.
Please remember that both libraries are donating relatively significant amounts of money to the Bog for doing an hour / hour and a half demo. Both demos are combinations of education and entertainment (as most kids learn best when entertained), and with the parents attending a new member is always possible. We can expect around 50 kids to attend at each library’s program.
If you have any questions or are able to attend either or both demos, please contact me: Cait/Kathleen at 724_238_0114 (leave a message if you get the machine) or snowdragon1027@yahoo.com. Thank you to those who have already volunteered and to those who hopefully still will!
In service,
Lady Caitilín ní Mhaolconaire
DIRECTIONS TO LIGONIER LIBRARY: Make your best way to route 30 - from Greensburg this is heading East; from Jennerstown, West. At the intersection of routes 30 & 711, you will want to turn up into town (from Gbg make a left; from Jennerstown, right - the Fort and a Cogo’s are on either side of the street which is South Market Street/711 N). At the top of hill, you will come to stop sign - the bandstand is in front of you and the library is the columned building on the left. Park on the diamond or any side street... if you continue on 711, you will see a parking lot on your left, but this is 24hr metered so bring quarters - the streets are free after 5pm. FROM JOHNSTOWN: make your best way to route 271 follow to route 711S and this will bring you right into town, you will pass parking lot on right (24hr metering) at stop sign, Library will be columned building on Right.
DIRECTIONS TO LATROBE LIBRARY: make your best way to route 30. Take Route 981 North (located past both plazas and near the turn for the airport) about 2 miles into town, bear right at Y just over bridge. At first stoplight, turn right onto Jefferson St. At second stop sign, turn left onto Chestnut St., (Valley Dairy Corner). Go one block to stoplight. Library is brick building with clock tower on far left corner. There is a municipal parking lot behind the library.
