Garb and Scootera Final
Ladies, we've all be in a feast line, and someone
steps on your wonderful period ensemble that took you hours upon hours to make
and that size 12 foot behind you did some serious damage in a few small seconds.
Now imagine that same ensemble wrapped around the wheel
of your mobility scooter. You have now stepped into the world of SCA women with
Mobility issues. Some will only be using scooters, or motorized wheelchairs for
a short time, and some will have the scooter so long it has a name. When I got
on my scooter in garb for the first time, I felt wonderful; I had my mobility
back and with my device on the front of the scooter I made a reasonable attempt
to look like I belonged. It was a good thing the test run was done at home, I
couldn't steer because I needed both hands to hold my dress off the ground!
The first event I took the scooter to was War Practice
2003. I was surprised to see so many people, both men and women using mobility
scooters, so my apprehension slipped away.
This past Pennsic, proved that women in scooters can
still dress ‘period appropriate’. I saw everything from simple tunics to amazing
Tudor garb, and everything in between.
But how do you adapt your garb if you’re in a motorized
carriage? There are two items to consider. First how long will you be using a
scooter? If it’s only temporary than make a few new pieces or adapt your current
wardrobe. But if your scooter goes to every event you attend, then you need
other ideas. Wearing pants with a beautiful coat is certainly an option. If you
are the type of person who prefers new garb for every big event, making it with
less material in the skirt is more suited to life in a scooter. But if you
already have an entirely different closet just for your garb, cutting a
beautiful dress down to accommodate your stead with wheels can be painful but
necessary. Using hooks and eyes (old fashioned kind not Velcro) works. The gown
is short enough when on the scooter and long enough when standing or sitting at
the campfire or feast. If you would like an even easier method, use the hem of
your gown as a placket and run a drawstring through it.
You can also mimic the look of a skirt by wearing a
wonderful billowy blouse, and pairing it with pants (think palazzo pants from
the 70's). This option gives you the look of a dress but the practicality of
pants. This makes a wonderful outfit and while not period, neither is the
scooter. Wearing a cloak becomes another issue. While I happen to like a long
flowing cloak, and the material it allows me to bundle up in, again, I hate
having it wrapped around the tires of my scooter. So making a cloak that only
falls to the knees or calves is better for riding around, and keep the long
flowing cape for camp. Oh, and don't forget armholes, you need to steer. When
closing your cloak, put an extra set of frogs/clasps or a second cloak pin 2 or
3 inches above your waist to help keep you warm. The extra closure will also
help gather up some of the excess and put it in your lap, not around the tires.
I hope most of you will never need to worry about these
issues. But if you do find a need for a mobility scooter, please keep these tips
in mind.

Baronial Bardic Competition
Theme for Bardic Competition is "Whose line doth it be"
A Bard needs to "think on his/her feet," this year contestants will need to do just that.
Here's how it will work. All gentles in attendance will have an opportunity to write a medieval idea or theme and drop it into the hat. You will choose a card from the hat. The card will then be read aloud to the audience. You will then need to act or sing or dance or tell a story or all of the above which best reflects the idea.

Baronial Court Report
Being the report for the Court of Their Excellencies, Quinn and Vivienne, at AEthelmearc Fall Aecademy held 6 November AS 39 (2004) and hosted by the Incipient Canton of Geal Mor and sponsored by the Barony of St. Swithin’s Bog. Lady Caitilín ní Mhaolconaire and Baroness AElfra Long, reporting heralds.
Their Royal Majesties, Rurik and Angelik, gave leave for Their Excellencies to hold Their court, and the following are the results:
Lady Kathryn de Lyon de Sevoire’s presence in court was strongly encouraged by Their Excellencies. As autocrat, Lady Kathryn thanked and gave tokens of appreciation to everyone who helped her with the event. Their Excellencies then bestowed a token of thanks upon her for finding such a beautiful site and for organizing, with the help of her support team, such a wonderful event.
Baron Quinn spoke words of gratitude to all who attended and helped make the event such a success.
Thomas and Kathleen Rose were invited before Their Excellencies whereupon they were inducted into the Order of St. Swithin for Service.
Feeling the order was missing a member, Baron Quinn directed the heralds to call Marita la Tejadora before Them and equally inducted her into the Order of St. Swithin for Service.
And so closed the Court of Their Excellencies, Quinn and Vivienne, with thanks to Their Royal Majesties, Rurik and Angelik.
Submitted in faithful service by Lady Caitilin ni Mhaolconaire.

The Barony of St. Swithin’s Bog’s Annual 12th Night
January 22, 2005
Barony of St. Swithin's Bog
(Jennerstown, PA)
The Barony of St. Swithin's Bog extends a heart-felt invitation to the Knowne World for our annual 12th Night Celebration to be held Saturday, January 22, 2005, at Green Gables in Jennerstown, PA (no street address). This is our traditional site, a quite period-looking hall with stone walls, giant tree-trunk columns holding up a cathedral ceiling, parquet floors and vine-covered mullioned windows.
Come spend the day feasting, relaxing and enjoying time with friends old and new. This year will feature an all day munchie sideboard prepared by the Bog’s finest cooks with heartier dishes appearing at noon and in the early evening, plus desserts, of course! We will also be holding a Chinese auction of select, prearranged items (so please do not bring auction items as there will be no auction discount). Each gentle will receive one auction ticket at the door with their site fee. Additional tickets will be available for purchase at a nominal cost (so you can buy lots!) Drawing for all items will be held after Royal and Baronial courts.
Doors will open at 10:00 a.m. and close at 9:00 p.m. As Green Gables is a commercial restaurant with a liquor license, no alcohol can be brought on site; however, the restaurant will provide a cash bar.
Autocrat for the event is Baroness Charmaine of Falkensee (Sally C. Fink, 331 Penn Ave., Johnstown, PA 15905; 814-255-5176; sphink@twd.net) with Lucia Snorrisdottir (Lisa Wagner, 1600 Bedford St., Apt. D, Johnstown, PA 15902, 814-266-1248) as co-autocrat. (No calls after 8 p.m. at either phone, please.)
Your cost for a day of scrumptious food and hearty fellowship is $15.00. (The $3.00 non-member surcharge will be collected at the door. Please do not include it as part of your reservations.) All halflings (12 and under) will be $7.00. Make checks payable to "SCA, Inc.-St. Swithin's Bog." The only reservation is a PAID reservation; these should be mailed to the reservations clerk: THL Cynthia Loved of Tower (Cynthia J. Chapple, 1945 Florida Ave., Johnstown, PA 15902; 814-266-1347, thlcynthiake@floodcity.net. Calls only between 6 and 8 p.m., please). Deadline for paid reservations is JANUARY 15, 2005.
