From the Baron & Baroness

Greetings Fellow Boggers

Words can not express how proud we are to be Boggers.
What a 3 day!! Thanks to everyone (and there were so many) who gave of their time and sweat off their brow to make this years event the best ever. The Bog machine in action is a wondrous thing indeed. A special thank you to all those who helped who are displaced Boggers or not of Bog born, but none the less Bog. This is our last 3 day as your Baron and Baroness and we could not have hoped for a better event. Thank you all.
Many Boggers were recognized by Their Royal Majesties, Lord Tower has been made a companion of the order of the Milrind (he should now be addressed as The Honorable Lord), Lady Rowan Blackthorne was made a companion of the Sycamore., Emilia O'Madigan (bubba), Brandi, Nelie, Corwyn ap Nennius the Dirge, Cellach mac Toimin were all awarded AOA's and should now be addressed as Lord or Lady.
Our court- Lord Alric of the Mists was inducted into our order of St. Swithin for martial activities and THL Tower was inducted into our order of St. Swithin for service. Garath Craig was installed as our new captain of the guard.
Thus July comes to a close.
We hope to see many of you at Pennsic. This year we will be guarding AEthelmearc Royal on Sunday August 10th, from 5 pm to 9pm. If you plan to guard please see Garath. Opening ceremonies will be held at 11 am on Sunday Aug. 10th. Please try to process with the Barony and stand with us that the world would know the greatness of AEthelmearc and the Bog. Please plan to leave Bog camp at 9:30.
AEthelmearc Court will be held Tuesday Aug. 12th at 7 pm, if you would process with us please plan to leave Bog camp at 6pm.
Baronial Champs will be held Saturday August 30th, Please see the announcement if the newsletter. This will be a free event as we would have as many come and spent the day as possible.

From the Seneschal

Greetings Fellow Boggers and Friends,

We have just experienced another successful Three day Event. Out of fear of forgetting to specifically name someone, I'm going to run through this by category. Thanks to: our Autocrats, feastocrats, set up crew, tear down crew, clean up crew. Our runners and gophers, the officers who ran things, the participants...well heck, thanks to the entire Bog for creating that wonderful machine that runs itself and made the event what is was- GREAT.
Coming up is the Pennsic War. I'm hoping to see many of you there. Stay safe and healthy and have lots of fun!
Right after War will be our Champions Event. Lets have a big turn out. It's not about the winning, it's all about the participation and having fun doing those things we love, and trying out new things. I remember I had a good time last year trying out thrown weapons.
Anyone who desires to run for Baron and Baroness....have your letters of intent ready for publishing in the September newsletter. This is the official call for those letters. This will also be posted separately in the newsletter. I would like to add, please remember this is about fun. We may have a very hard decision in the election. The Bog is full of wonderful capable gentles. I can't see the Baronial election ever being an easy choice. To all those who run, keep in mind that there is a long future in front of the Bog, there are plenty of terms to be filled. If you don't "win", perhaps that is just fate saving you for the time your service will mean the most.

In service,
Talishar

From the Chronicler

Greetings all,

I’d like to express my gratitude to my fellow Boggers who worked so hard to make this year’s 3-day such a fantastic event; from the smallest detail to that sumptuous feast!!! Vi vats to you all! It is an honor to be associated with you! Congratulations to all who received an award from the Barony & Kingdom, they were well earned. And a special Vi vat to Lodovick, winner of the Inter-Baronial Pearl tourney for Fencing! And thank you to Their Majesties who treated us to a spectacular tourney full of all the things best in the SCA and truly what the event was about - Honor & Chivalry!
Now I must get down to business. With the passing of July, we’ve acquired a few new officers and a few old officers have taken new positions.  If you are a new officer, or old officer taking a new post, please make sure send your current information to me for the hard-copy of the newsletter. I know that I need phone numbers and/or email addresses on at least the Chatelaine, Jorka, and A&S, Ian.  Thank you very much.
And this to all members of the Barony & her friends - and my family and friends - I wish you a safe but enjoyable Pennsic! You shall be missed by those of us who must remain behind - perhaps the others will join me in lighting (or plugging in) a candle in our windows to guide all of you home safely.
If you have any submissions or suggestions for the newsletter; or artwork for the cover or as inside filler, please contact me, Cait (aka Kathleen) at 724-238-0114 (if you get the answering machine, please leave a message) or bogchronicler@yahoo.com.

Minutes from the Bog's July Business Meeting

Greetings fellow Boggers,

The following is the readers digest version (or tali-tales) of the July Business meeting held in Roxbury Park. For those who couldn't attend, ya missed a beautiful sunny summer day, and we all missed you. Baron/ess: Come to the three day and don't forget Baronial Champs on the 30th of August.

Exchequer: 3,884.64 in checking, that will be minus a bit after check writing that will take place after the meeting. (three day stuff etc.)
     A&S:
Dame Viv has dropped dead! Ian has taken her place (and boy will Viv's cats be surprised) errrr, anyhow- Ian will now be the A&S officer. Yeah Ian
     Chatelaine:
Baroness Charmaine has dropped dead! Lord Jorka has taken her place (you should have seen him in the gown LOL) ummm, anyhow- Welcome back Jorka.
     Herald:
Apparently our herald had dropped dead previously and we were not aware of this until we smelled the stench. Graciously Dame Viv has stepped up to take on the office and Baroness Charmaine will help her dispose of the remains. errrr send in submissions and stuff.
     Chronicler:
Kiwi is still tender but in a semblance of working order. We are going to have an August newsletter. Surprise.
     New/Old Business:
Three day is upon us. Anyone who can help load up the contents of the Baronial shed and the BFP will be welcomed with a huge smile at the Chapples Castle Thursday night around (what did you say THL? 5:30?????)
Her Majesty desires our fighters to join in the fun of the Invitational tourney. Anyone who shows with a camper, and wants electric..... See THL Cynthia. There are special considerations to be followed per the site owners.
     More old:
In answer to a question as to what ever happened to the money that was held by Nemralous Noctua (and yes my spelling sucks!) when they dissolved. The answer as provided by East Kingdom Exchequer to AElthelmearc Exchequer - "the money was placed into the East Kingdom treasury". Monies apparently always revert to the kingdom treasury whenever a group dissolves. (information provided by THL Cynthia) In answer to a question that was posed "what about the Westland Mors group money?" According to our bylaws- if a canton gets started in the barony, it can be granted up to 500$ seed money. (sorry, don't have time to look up the paragraph, page and epistle number right now) No canton was ever started. All the money in the Bog treasury is Bog money. (nothing ever separated from the bog, the bog is the bog is the bog is........) AND MOVING RIGHT ALONG TO OTHER NEW BUSINESS AND NEWS FROM THE JULY OFFICERS MEETING.
In regards to the possibility of a Shire forming...........it was decided to do an opinion poll. An unofficial type poll to see how the populous feels so that the Baron/ess and seneschal may be guided in decisions in regards to zip code granting. Because we decided to poll National and non national members, the polls will be color coded to separate the National member from non. Three choices (complete with explanations will be provided) 1. No change 2. become a canton. 3 become a separate shire. Anyhow it's all on paper and anyone with questions may contact me.
The officers added to the by-laws. The baronial marshals (i.e. fence, rattan etc.) must schedule and attend at least one practice a month.
Rose Thorne was appointed by the officers as the Assistant Seneschal of the western portion of the bog. Lady Kat and Kiwi (oh ok, its LADY CAIT isn't it?) had previously held this post. They have now passed the torch and we are sure that Rose will do a wonderful job.

And that is the short version of the meeting, if I missed anything I'm sorry. It shouldn't take me longer to type this than it took to be at the meeting. Soooooo I'm outta here.

News from the Western Border

Report from the Western Border:

No Tuesday gathering on the Western Border of the Bog for August due to Pennsic. But we hope to see everyone again on Tuesday, September 9, 2003 at Adams Memorial Library (1112 Ligonier St., Latrobe; 724-539-1972) from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. As always, we have the room at 6pm so don’t be afraid to show up early.

Unto the faire and gentle folk of St. Swithin's Bog,

Hopefully, this missive finds everyone in good health and spirits after a spectacular 3-Day event. My heart has been warmed at the hearth of friendship carefully tended by the members of the Bog. As many already know, I've been given the opportunity to serve the bog in the capacity of Assistant Seneschal, and I want to say thank you to those who have already given me support and to those whom I will continue to ply with questions and for advice in the future. I am also working with Lord Jorka, our new Chatelaine, in the capacity of contact person for new members out this way.

Normally there is no official meeting out on the Border in the month of August due to Pennsic; however, Lady Kat has been kind enough to open a time slot on August 30th at Baronial Champs for there to be an official meeting. There has been an interest expressed in changing the day, time, and location of official meetings on the Border. Should you have a preference and idea for a potential meeting venue, please bring that information with you to the event. For September, the official meeting time and place will remain the second Tuesday at Adam's Memorial Library in Latrobe.

I would also like to ask that if you have ideas for a workshop you'd like to teach or attend, please bring those forward at the meeting on August 30th. Given that much of the Bog will be gathered together on that day, we should be able to set some preliminary dates and times for workshops.

Please contact me by phone at 724-850-7404 or email me at ThornesKeep@hotmail.com (please put "SCA" in the subject line so my filter doesn't mistake you for spam).

In service,
Rose

Fianna and its members will be involved with two concert at War – Concert to benefit the Chirurgeons: Tuesday, August 12 at 7:30 PM probably in the A&S performance tent. And Rowan will be interpreting (in American Sign Language) for Duke Moonwulf's (mka Michael Longcour) concert. He always gives the concert to benefit the Portersville EMS. That will be Sunday the 10th, in the evening, and again probably in the performance tent. Both concerts are well-worth attending, if only as a way of supporting the EMS / Chirurgeons, though 'Wulf is really good, and Rowan is fun to watch as an interpreter. And, of course Fianna is pretty good in their own right. :-) Please check the Pennsic booklet for the exact times of both concerts.

Thanks much, Morgan

From a Member of the Barony

Many of you may have read this missive on the Bog’s e-group and I hope, like myself, found it quite touching and to express much of what we ourselves may have felt on many occasions... and most especially at this years event. So it is with Michela’s permission that I add this letter of thanks to the newsletter so that all may read and enjoy!

We speak often of the dream.
But never has a dream felt in slumber brought such passion to my heart. This waking dream we share is far more precious because much of it is real.
The strength with which Ludwig and Quinn bore me up the hill was real, the sweat on their brow was real, and the willingness and selflessness with which they gave of themselves was real. They may not realize the rarity of the gift they give because in the SCA giving is such second nature but trust me as I say many in mundane circles would not have done so. Small and inadequate are the words of thanks I can offer to them and too everyone who aided me throughout the day.
I fear that sometimes we don't realize the precious nature of what we share. And so I with words not half so fair as those the bards spoke try to express what I felt.
I shared a meal with two I did not know at its beginning and we shared something of ourselves as well. The exquisite meal and the warmth of our conversation was real.
Throughout the day, the emotions expressed were real.
The look of shock and love in Tower's eyes when he was presented with the scroll was real as were those in the eyes of all the men who spoke of their ladies.
All of the emotions that come with life were expressed and they were real.
Even pain as Henri shared a broken heart and I was moved to tears by a stranger. And this was real. The quickness and readiness with which comfort was offered him, let me know I was truly in a special place.
Where in mundane life is a man allowed to grieve and have so many arms to hold him.
When in mundane life do we take the time to declare our love for someone.
When do we recognize the strengths of friends and thank them for their gifts and kindness.
The mundane world as a whole does not often do these things. And many in that world will look at us oddly with our long flowing skirts and duct taped armor not understanding what it is we do. A rare breed indeed are we who take the time to celebrate life and friends.

There was also one yesterday who was searching for meaning he had lost along the way. I often do the same, but it is days like yesterday that give me my answers.

Thank you for a marvelous time.

Michela

Pennsic Blood Drive

Greetings,

I am Lady Angelique d'Herisson from the Middle Kingdom and I am organizing a blood drive at Pennsic War this year. I would like to make the populace aware of their opportunity to help others win their battles for life as we fight ours for honor.

What to Read....

As you go off to War, there may be some who like to take a book with them. While I have not read this title, the description sounded interesting and at a time when both the Scadian war and real life war surround us, it seemed a timely suggestion:

The Knights Templars : God warriors, the devil’s bankers by Frank Sanello – (From Publisher's Weekly) The medieval Knights Templar were warrior-monks, mostly aristocratic men who took vows of poverty, chastity and obedience in return for assurances that they would enter heaven. Thus guaranteed salvation and eternal life, they fought in the Crusades with reckless abandon. Sanello (The Opium Wars) pedantically traces the order's rise and fall over the course of two centuries. It originated in the 12th century to provide protection to pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land, and Templars fought courageously in various Crusades. By the beginning of the 13th century, they had become victims of their own courage, suffering tremendous military losses in Palestine. But their presence in Europe grew and their reputation as bankers developed. As Sanello points out, the Templars invented the check and established the first branch banks, where pilgrims could take out loans for their travels to Jerusalem. By the early 14th century, however, the order had fallen on hard times, accused by the Inquisition of homosexuality, greed and heresy. Their Grand Master, Jacques de Molay, was burned at the stake as a heretic in 1314, and with this the order was banned. Through a focus on various legends that have since arisen-that the Templars were the precursors of Masons and keepers of the Holy Grail-Sanello shows how the order has been kept alive in name if not in reality. This isn't history at its richest: the writing is overly simple, though spiked with strange attempts at sophistication, as in referring to St. Bernard's "anal-retentive charter" for the order. Illus. The Barony of St. Swithin's Bog Baronial Champs Event
Saturday, August 30th

10am until dark

The Baron and Baroness say let the populous come for FREE!

So now you have no excuse for not attending.

Food: The event will have an all day buffet that you may come and pick at when it suits you. I will be providing the main meat dish (something like venison chili and/or something else to use up all of this ground venison I have) and bread (to dip in the chili of course). Everyone attending is asked to bring an item for the buffet. If you are cooking, please try to make a period dish of your choice. Make your favorite medieval recipe to show off! Please do not make huge amounts or we'll have too much left over. But please bring copies of your recipe in case someone really goes crazy over it. There is a fireplace/grill in the main pavilion. If anyone wishes to take on the challenge of grilling, please let me know- and plan to bring your own food, cooking utensils and wood. If anyone has any special dietary or physical needs please also let me know ASAP so that I can take care of these things ahead of time. ALSO- please keep in mind the site does not have a refrigerator, but we will have tables with outlets nearby. Therefore, make food that will be ok sitting out all day (covered please), or can remain warming in a crock pot. If it needs to be kept chilled, please put it in a well iced cooler.

For those who are not cooking, then you may bring an item such as paper towels, extra plastic-ware, bowls, cups, plates, etc. (for others who may not have feast gear). For the culinary challenged, you may also want to just bring items such as cut up veggies, nuts, whole fruits, and other such period items that are fine just sitting in a bowl on a table- you know, good easy finger food! If you decide what you want to bring in advance, please let me know. Any extra items we have left over will be saved (if possible) for 12fth Night or another activity.

Drinks: I will be providing quick-mix iced tea and of course water. But this is a WET SITE!! So all of our brewers are expected to bring their best samples of their latest brews so the Autocrat...I mean, the Baron and Baroness, can sample them all!

Other needs & activities: If anyone has some good tarps, and tie down ropes, please let me know or just bring them in case we may need those to put up around the pavilions in case of rain (I only have one).

If anyone is interested in any other non-martial activities, please let me know your interests and I will try to accommodate you. Or just bring your stuff and we'll adlib. There is plenty of room to spread out and do other things: A&S work, dancing, etc.

*ALSO- we can have merchants at this site! If anyone would like to merchant, notification to me is nice, but not necessary. Remember rain could happen, so make sure your wares are well protected by your tent. I also own an easy to put up tent that would be available if you would need it, but it is open on all sides, not only good to provide shade, not rain protection.

LASTLY- The champions still need to contact me ASAP so I know what they are doing, how much space they need, what time frame they are thinking of for their activity, and if there is anything else needed by me. Send me an email, a phone call, anything- or force me to hunt you down. The Champions will be expected to bring their own supplies for their activities (rope, pegs, etc.), and they will be setting up their own areas as they see best when they get to the site. Champs, please try to get there early to claim some ground and set up.

I hope to see everyone there- and remember to think good weather thoughts!

Lady Kathryn de Lyon, "Kat"

DIRECTIONS:

From the East: make your best way to Rte 30 (through Ligonier) and West toward Latrobe. As you approach Latrobe, you’ll pass a traffic light - a bridge and damn on left - continue on Rte 30. Next, you’ll pass a BP Station on left, then see an overpass ahead. A Dodge dealership is on right, and the turn is approx. 150 Ft after; staying in the right-hand lane, get off at the first exit for Rte 982 & Latrobe (before going under the overpass); at the top of the ramp, merge onto Rte 982 toward Latrobe. ***Stay on this road, you’ll cross over a bridge and come to a traffic light, continue straight; you’ll come to a 2nd traffic light (a Sheetz is on left) continue straight; you will then go over railroad tracks continue straight about one block, make a Right onto Raymond Avenue go about 2 blocks and make another right hand turn and an immediate left hand turn into the parking lot. There will also be large SCA signs to help guide you.

From the West: make your best way to Rte 30 passed Greensburg and East to Latrobe. Beginning at the Arnold Palmer Airport, you will go through 3 traffic lights (beware, just after the 2nd light, they are doing construction and the road may be down to one lane). After the Drive-in Theater on your right, you will start down a hill and see an overpass, get in the right lane - continue on Rte 30 going under the overpass and immediately take the right-hand turn. You will loop up onto Rte 982 toward Latrobe. The road will cross over Rte 30. *** Follow from above.
